Partnership with Solterre: Build for Ghana Continues

2017-03-13

Have you ever wondered what happens to our old and outdated jerseys? Here is what we at Halifax City do with them...

This article was taken from the Solterre: Build for Ghana's facebook page, and it describes the annual soccer tournament.  Halifax City has been proud to provide jerseys, medals, trophies, and other items to support this fantastic effort in Ghana, where players are as proud of the City Crest as we are in Halifax!

Friday was the school's soccer tournament, the timing of which was organized for our arrival. Four schools, twelve teams in grades primary and junior high. It was wonderful to see the ongoing impact of donations from Canada. This year we brought cleats from Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan, from groups and individuals. Still evident is the Halifax City Soccer Club jerseys from the past two years that were given to several schools. It was delightful to see matches with visiting teams wearing them.

As always, Abetenim is fiercely competitive for their football. The junior high school boys team and girls team both made it to the finals. The girls had a disappointing one-nil loss.

The boys final is considered "the major" here. The boys were wearing the green and white striped HCSC soccer jerseys that we brought with us two years ago. I consider those to be their lucky jerseys because we have yet to see Abetenim lose a match when they wear them. This includes the senior men's A and B teams that also share the jerseys.

Today's boys final ended in a draw at the end of regulation time and had to go to penalties.

The luck of the jerseys carries on. The mayhem that followed rivals any any World Cup win. The photos convey the slightest image of it.
