33 Halifax City players involved in university soccer this past week
In Canada and the United States 33 Halifax City players were involved in university soccer this past week. Here is a quick recap of how their week went.
FEMALE
Goalkeeper Rebecca Duda got off to great start this weekend as she collected the player of the game award in the UNB Varsity Reds 2-2 tie with St FX. Paige Vincent started both of UNB’s games this weekend, whilst second year Sarah Moignard returned from injury to make the match day roster against the X-Women. Duda was awarded the UNB Female Athlete of the Week for her performance against X.

Playing for St FX against their City teammates were year sisters Chloe Brennan and Elise Brennan. Chloe and Elise started in both the 2-2 tie with UNB and the 1-0 victory over the UPEI Panthers. Chloe was named in the NSSL All Star team for her performances with City this summer.
Jensen Hudder started both games this weekend for the Dalhousie Tigers as they suffered a difficult start to their season, losing their opening fixtures away against Memorial University in Newfoundland.
Forth year centre back Celina Cavadini captained the SMU Huskies in their opening fixture defeats against strong Acadia and Moncton teams. First year player Nicole Theriault also started both games for the Huskies.
Coach Danielle Cyr made the perfect start to life as the Head Coach of the MSVU Mystics. MSVU won 5-0 and 3-0 in their opening weekend games against UNBSJ and STU. Amongst the players involved for the Mount were senior women’s players Katie Black and Katrina Macias.
Katherine Bearne helped the Ottawa Gee Gees maintain their 100% record as they beat Ryerson 2-0 and Toronto 2-1. Bearne started both games, scoring the opening goal against Ryerson.

In the US, Hannah Fleet tasted victory as NCAA Div 1 Southern Methodist University Mustangs beat Abilene Christian 6-1. Despite not getting on the scoresheet, Fleet grabbed 3 assists in the victory.
Elsewhere in the states Hannah Bruce was unable to help Utah Valley in their 1-0 defeat on the road to Colorado College. In Alabama, Larissa White and Emily Fleming both started for Alabama State University as they fell 1-0 to Lipscomb.

MALE:
Across the country, seventeen male Halifax City players were on show this weekend for their university teams.
Cooper Coats stole the show for Acadia this weekend scoring back-to-back hattricks in 3-0 and 8-0 wins over SMU and Mount Alison this weekend. Cory Cadeau, Sam Gillis and John Attenborough also featured for the Axemen, while first year Jack Nielsen was included in the match day squad. Coats was named both Acadia and AUS male Athlete of the week and is 2nd on the leaderboard for scoring in the whole of Canada.

First year players Alex Black and Darien Rolle made their AUS debuts, starting for SMU this week in the defeat at Acadia. Despite the defeat they were able to gain their first point of the season in a 0-0 draw with Moncton.
Freddy Bekkers, Ryan Merlin, Jamie Matthews and Kallen Heenan all featured the Dalhousie Tigers this weekend away at Memorial. Bekkers rescued a point on Saturday with a 90th minute equalizer on Saturday in a 1-1 tie in Newfoundland, while Heenan scored on Sunday in a 2-0 victory in which Merlin collected the shut out. Bekkers was named the Dalhousie Male Athlete of the Week for his performances.

At St FX both Liam Elbourne and Joe Edgerton started both games as the X-Men beat UPEI 2-0 on Saturday and tied the UNB Varity Reds 0-0 on Sunday. First year defender Jack Eliot was included in the game day roster for both games.
Away from Nova Scotia, both Sam Abernethy and Rory McParland featured for the Queens Gaels in the OUA division this weekend. The Gaels won 3-1 on the road against AT UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday before tying 1-1 with AT Trent Excalibur on Sunday
Elsewhere in the OUA Dondrae Fells started both games for Carleton as they tied 1-1 with University of Toronto and fell 4-1 to Ryserson. There was redemption for Fells however as Carleton beat Trent 9-1 on Wednesday.
